Senior Pastor

Since June of 1998, I have served as pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Owasso, Oklahoma and previously served United Methodist Churches in Commerce, Altus, and Enid. I am a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky and have completed two major continuing education programs: The Academy for Preaching sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church and the Beeson Institute for Advanced Church Leadership sponsored by Asbury Theological Seminary. Each course requires 3 years to complete. My favorite activity is teaching the scriptures. In other assignments I taught Bethel Bible Study classes and here at Owasso FUMC, the Associate Pastor and I lead Disciple Bible Study classes. In addition to being an avid Dallas Cowboy fan, I collect nativity sets, which are displayed in my office. My wife, Priscilla, and I have two children: Amy Givens who is a youth director in Altus and Aaron who is studying to be a minister.

Taud Boatman
Associate Pastor

I have been appointed here as the Associate Pastor since June of 2005. I am a graduate of Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa. My wife, Buffy and I have 3 daughters: Kenna, Lindey, and MaKenzie. We are a blended family in that Kenna and Lindey are from my first marriage. Kenna lives with us fulltime while Lindey lives with their mother in Elkhart, KS. We continue to be so excited about this community and this church family. We know that God is doing great and wonderful things through the people and the ministries here.

One of my responsibilities is to incorporate new members and to find places for them to plug in to the life of the church. I’d invite you to share with me some of the things you see about our congregation and if there’s an area that you’d like to be serving in but just didn’t know how to get involved, please see me or Chris and let us know. We’d be honored to help you find your place and your role here. I take the vows of church membership very seriously – that when we join the church we promise to support it with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service. There are so many wonderful opportunities to serve God in this church and the community of Owasso.

I am a commissioned/probationary elder within our conference of the United Methodist Church. After the next three years of being monitored, evaluated, and watched over by a committee here at the church and the conference Board of Ordained Ministry; I hope to be fully ordained. I say all of that to let you know that if you are hearing a calling into ministry and you don’t know what to make of it or what steps you need to take, you can come and talk to me or Chris. In the last ten years, this church has had quite a few people answer a calling – further proof of what God is doing in our midst. This is a very special time in our church. It’s an exciting time. Won’t you come and be a part of it? I look forward to getting know you. Please come and Share the Journey with us.

Carol Cooper
Director of Youth Ministries

Email Carol

Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Since July of 2001 I have been on staff as Director of Youth Ministries and have been extremely blessed to be a part of a church that has a huge heart for Discipleship, Missions/Service and Prayer. My favorite parts of Youth Ministry are the relationships formed and the summer activities like Camp and Missions Trips. So many life-changing moments happen during our weeks of camp and Youth Force, and experiencing God in such ways only deepens my walk with Him. I am a graduate of Colorado Christian University where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Youth Ministry with a Minor in Biblical Studies.  I am married to a wonderful man, Keith, who has taught me so much about allowing God to lead us and not worrying so much about the small stuff.  In May of 2007 we were blessed with a beautiful son, William Eliot.  He instantly took hold of our hearts and has shown us, at least to our understanding, just how much God must love His children.  Along with my work with youth I am active in The Pumpkin Patch (www.ppatch.fumcowasso.org), helping plan Special Worship Services, the Missions Committee, and I serve as the Secretary of the Brandon Magalassi Memorial Scholarship Foundation (www.brandonsscholarship.org). On a personal note, I love to watch movies, go on bike rides, read, play cards and spend time with my family on Grand Lake. If you’re looking for a church that loves God, helping others and is a friendly place to belong, I invite you to visit us! You will experience the love of God and others the moment you walk into our church...

Praise & Worship Music Leader

In September of 2007 I began working as the Director of Music Ministries at the First United Methodist Church Owasso. My first year here was also my last year of school, earning a degree from Northeastern State University in vocal performance. Prior to coming to FUMC Owasso, I spent five years serving the First United Methodist Church in Claremore and some time at All Souls Unitarian Church and Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church. I grew up Assembly of God and Baptist, so I feel equally at home in a liturgical setting as well as contemporary. Other than experience at churches, I have taught piano and voice lessons for twenty years, running a studio out of my home and I sing professionally.  I made my operatic debut as the infamous Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro with the Tulsa Opera in 1992. Since then, additional roles performed include Mrs. McLean in Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah, the witch in Sondheim’s Into the Woods and Carmen. Other performances include The Magic Flute, Fidelio, Carmen, Tosca and Madame Butterfly. I enjoy appearing as a soloist in numerous concert and oratorio works such as Handel’s Messiah, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor as well as Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. I have also made many appearances performing alto/mezzo solos with the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus. These include  Mozart’s Requiem, Schubert’s Magnificat in C, Mozart’s Vesperae Solemnis de Confessore and Beethoven’s Mass in C.

Now that the bragging is over, I rejoice in being the proud mother of Cameron, Connor and Christian and the wife of Doug. We are so blessed to be a part of this church family.

Susan Moreland
Admin. Secretary

I began my journey here on January 15, 2001 as the Administrative Secretary.  I have been blessed by all the wonderful people I work with and have met since I started working here.

My family and I moved to Owasso from Aurora, Missouri in the summer of 1999.   My husband’s name is Mike and we have a daughter, Tiffany who graduated from Owasso High School and is now a Certified Medical Assistant and our son, Michael, who will graduate from Owasso High School in 2009.  At this time he plans on going into the Marines and then going to school to become a teacher.   Some of my interests and hobbies are gardening, walking my dogs, riding my 4-wheeler, and working on different craft projects.

I began serving as Financial Secretary on February 1, 2007, and had previously served as Communications Secretary since August of 2005. In 1990, I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management, and worked in legal, accounting, payroll, and franchise sales before becoming a stay-at-home mom in 1998 when our son was born. My husband, Douglas, son Mitchell, and I began attending the First United Methodist Church of Owasso on February 14, 1999. We became very active right away by participating in various activities like Pathfinder Sunday School, Heavenbound Choir, and Disciple Bible Study. In addition to serving on staff, I volunteer as an Elementary Sunday School teacher, a Junior Church teacher, a Pumpkin Patch teacher and storyteller, a Blood Drive Committee member, and serve as Treasurer of The Brandon Magalassi Memorial Scholarship Foundation (www.brandonsscholarship.org ). I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to do the work I love and use the gifts that God has given me for my loving church family.

I have attended quite a few different churches over the years, but none has been as friendly and welcoming as FUMC Owasso.  My husband Ken, my son Seth and I joined this fellowship on  July 13, 2003 and have been incredibly blessed ever since. I grew up in the Tulsa area and got my BBA in Marketing from the University of Oklahoma in 1991.  I was a proud member of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band and continue to support the Sooners.  My husband is a native of West Virginia, an Air Force veteran, and a recent (2007) graduate of the University of Oklahoma as well.  My son is not only into Cub Scouts, but also Hot Wheels and any kind of game - video, computer or board!  My husband enjoys astronomy and computers, and I enjoy learning new musical instruments - my current victim is an oboe.  I worked in various professions and volunteer positions until deciding to be a stay-at-home mom when I had my son in 1999.  What a great opportunity I have now - to work part-time at my church and be able to do everything else I want to do!  In addition to being an Assistant Cub Scout Leader and Pack Secretary for the scouts, I also currently direct the Littlest Lambs Children's Choir, occasionally play the flute and (try to) sing for worship services, and help around the church in any other way I can.  I produce the church newsletter, so if you ever need to put anything in our bi-monthly publication, feel free to email me here.  I also update the website calendar, too, so I love your input and updates. I am so glad to work for my church...I can't believe I get paid for this (but I'm glad I do)!

Charlie Fowler
Co-Lay Leader

My wife Chris, daughter Leslie, son John, and I have attended FUMC Owasso since moving to Owasso in 1997. I have been the Lay Leader for FUMC Owasso since January 2004 and am honored to serve the church as Lay Leader. I also lead the Pathfinders Sunday School class and participate in the choir. The thing I enjoy most about our church is our members and staff’s willingness to change in order to better reach out to our community. We have seen tremendous growth in our church in the last several years and we would like for you to become a part of it!

Successful ministry involves a combination of excellent staff and willing lay servants who use their unique gifts in service to Christ. Every individual is blessed with gifts and talents.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 1st Corinthians 12: 4-6

There are good preachers, good teachers, good organizers, good singers, good listeners, good craftsmen, and good cooks, just to name a few. What are your unique talents and are you using them in service to Christ?

We often take our community and our church for granted. My regular job involves travel to various parts of the world. Upon return I am always thankful of the many blessings and freedoms that we have to worship in a place like Owasso and in a church like First United Methodist. Please consider being part of our family and help us to spread the good news of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We have a unique place waiting just for you!

Nancy Youngs
Nursery Director

In September of 2007, I joined the staff of The Yellow Balloon Preschool – the preschool program of First United Methodist Church of Owasso. Yellow Balloon is celebrating its 30th year in 2008 !!  In March of 2008, I became the Nursery Director for FUMC Owasso. Prior to that, I was active in The Pumpkin Patch for Missions, a ministry of FUMC Owasso. And, from August of 2001 through May of 2007, I served as a teacher at Sonshine Preschool of Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso.  I enjoy watching children bloom and grow!

I am married to a wonderful, funny man – Chris, and we have a teen-age son, Zachary, who amazes and amuses me every day.  Life with these two is anything but predictable!

We were “transported” -as then seven-year-old Zac explained to his friends- to Oklahoma in June of 2000 from Houston, Texas.  I am a Native Texan who is proof that there is life after a move.  Becoming an active member of First United Methodist Church of Owasso is what helped ease that transition for me.  I will always BE a Native Texan who found a friendly, caring and supportive church family in Owasso, Oklahoma.

Becoming active in this church was easy – Someone invited me.  There are a lot of Someone’s in this church, but let me be a Someone for you – “I invite you to come and visit the church.  Stay awhile and get to know some of the members. You, too, may find a church home that makes a transition easier for you.”

My favorite quote:  “ When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would have not a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’”
